Tropical Island Resort
March 2024Southeast AsiaIsland Resort Microgrid
SiRay Energy delivered a comprehensive PV + BESS + Diesel microgrid system for a luxury tropical island resort in Southeast Asia. The project transforms abundant tropical sunshine into reliable 24/7 power, eliminating dependence on expensive diesel-only generation while maintaining seamless backup capability during monsoon weather.
Nestled on a pristine tropical island surrounded by turquoise waters, this luxury resort previously relied entirely on diesel generators for all electricity needs. With over 580 kW of peak load demand across guest villas, restaurants, water sports facilities, and back-of-house operations, the resort faced escalating fuel costs, noise pollution, and environmental concerns that threatened its eco-luxury brand positioning.

The client sought a turnkey renewable energy solution that leverages the island's abundant sunshine while preserving diesel backup for extended rainy periods.

The resort features extensive rooftop photovoltaic arrays covering multiple buildings, from guest villas to the main facilities. Additional solar capacity was deployed near the waterfront to capture unobstructed tropical sunlight.

The microgrid interfaces with the resort's existing electrical infrastructure through dedicated transformers and low-voltage switchgear. Two large power transformers step down voltage for distribution to all resort loads.

At the core of the system is an advanced Energy Management System (EMS) featuring a touchscreen HMI interface that provides real-time SCADA visualization. The system monitors PV generation, battery state-of-charge, diesel generator status, and load demand - automatically optimizing dispatch to minimize diesel runtime.
Real-time SCADA: PV, diesel, battery, and load topology
Battery Management System: RACK-level monitoring with SoC display
The EMS supports automatic mode switching between grid-tied, island, and backup modes. When solar generation exceeds resort demand, excess energy charges the battery. During evening hours or cloudy weather, the battery discharges to power the resort.
